The Annual Conference on The First-Year Experience takes place in Orlando from 13 to 16 February 2027. It is the primary professional development event for higher education staff working on student transition, retention and success in the first year of study. Attendees include student affairs professionals, academic advisors, orientation directors, faculty teaching first-year seminars and institutional researchers. The programme covers curriculum design for first-year courses, peer mentoring programmes, early alert systems, supporting first-generation and transfer students, and using institutional data to identify students at risk. Sessions are heavily practice-oriented, with most presentations delivered by staff describing programmes running at their own institutions rather than by external consultants. The conference has run for over four decades and maintains a strong returning attendee base. Orlando in February is peak season for the region, and conference hotel rates reflect that.
