The ASSA Annual Meeting brings together the Allied Social Science Associations, led by the American Economic Association, in Washington DC from 3 to 5 January 2027. It is the principal annual gathering for academic economists and adjacent social science disciplines, and doubles as the main hiring market for economics PhD graduates. The programme runs hundreds of parallel sessions covering macroeconomics, labour, development, econometrics, finance and economic history, alongside the job market interviews that dominate the schedule for many attendees. The early January timing is a longstanding feature of the meeting. Washington in early January is off-peak for tourism but the meeting itself fills conference hotels, and the compressed three-day schedule means almost all attendees stay on-site or nearby.
